The history of the Langhe is embraced by the history of our family.

Grandfather Matteo was a sharecropper in La Morra, where he managed some vineyards dedicated to the production of Barolo. He decided to set up his own business in 1963, buying some vineyards in Diano d’Alba, where our Winery is still located today.
The 1960s were a transitional period in the Langa, between the dark times of the two World Wars and the industrialisation that attracted so many people to towns like Alba and cities such as Turin and Milan, depriving the Langa countryside appeal and workforce. Grandfather Matteo never stopped believing in the potential of this land, and despite having had the opportunity to move elsewhere, he decided to stay.

La storia della famiglia Alario Claudio

His son Claudio’s task was to continue in this vein.

Dedicating every moment and all his attention to the vineyards, in 1988, bolstered by the first signs of interest in the wines of the Langhe, Claudio decided to set up on his own, making the first Alario Claudio vintages.

From then on, the winery began offering the traditional wines of the Langa – Dolcetto di Diano, Barbera and Nebbiolo – progressing, after a few years, to the stage of cultivating some Nebbiolo vines specifically for the production of Barolo.

The third generation’s responsibility is to honour those who came before us, with the knowledge and foresight to preserve everything for those who will come after. A fourth generation of the Alario family is already at work…
